The story

Moon just wants a simple life. Take care of her ten-year-old daughter Lilly and Jacques, the Frenchman she has lived with for eight years. She learned along the way how much life can charge. As an orphan. As a widow. As a veteran.

Routine is all she needs. Her early coffee watching Jacques make the bread. The drop-off line at Lilly's school. The counter of their bakery. The kids she teaches jujitsu at the Long Walk.

A snowboarding weekend with old friends. Watching Lilly glide down the mountain. Small pleasures.

But that's not how it works, is it. You don't get to choose to be tragedy's favorite daughter.

You don't get your say about a dark winter road. About your car going through the ice of a New England lake. About whether your daughter makes it out of the ER.

About her coming back.

The daughter who survived is not the one who died in the lake. Small things start to change. Then the loss of control.

Then, worse, watching the impossible become ordinary.

You're watching your life like a movie. And in the background, a presence. Very old. Intangible.

Publishing journey

Notes along the way.

This is my first book. I will share the useful parts here: the decisions, the edits, the mistakes, and what changes before publication.

The next chapter is taking shape. More soon.

Behind the book

Fabien Cordero

I am a French engineer who has lived abroad for more than twenty-five years, including in the United States, Canada, and across Europe. I have tried to write stories on and off since my teenage years, but what finally changed everything was a challenge from my cousins. Since then, I have been guided by one goal: to bring readers the best version of this story I can, and to hope they enjoy stepping into its world. I also like the idea that a story can outlive us. Long after I am gone, someone might find it and enjoy it.
